Stump grinding is a method of eliminating a tree stump by grinding it down into fine wood mulch. This process usually follows removing or lopping a tree, leaving only the stump behind. Stump grinding is a simpler, more efficient, and safer option than digging around the stump for removal. Additionally, it is environmentally friendly, as the fine mulch produced can be reused to enrich your garden’s soil and increase its organic carbon content.
What’s involved?Stump grinding is a process that uses specialised equipment known as a stump grinder. An operator carefully guides the sharp, powerful grinding wheel over the stump, effectively grinding the wood down into fine wood mulch. This process reduces the stump to below ground level—typically between 100mm to 300mm deep, according to industry standards—and removes the main root ball, which helps prevent the tree from regrowing. In most cases, this also makes the soil ready for replanting.
